Kathryn Bigelow was born in California in 1951. She started as a painter but transitioned into filmmaking shortly after her time in the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of Art. She is known in filmmaking for her action sequences. Bigelow has won several awards for her films, such as “The Hurt Locker” and became the first woman to win Best Director at the Academy Awards.
