Harriet Tubman was born in the 1820s in Maryland. Tubman was born into slavery and escaped to the north via the Underground Railroad. She returned to the south many times to help others flee. During the civil war, Tubman was a nurse and Union spy, delivering messages about Confederate troop placements and supply lines. She also assisted in the women’s suffrage movement and established the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged, which is now part of the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park.
