BILLIE JEAN KING
Billie Jean King was born in 1943 in California. King was skilled in athleticism from a young age, and after exploring other sports, ultimately, she chose tennis. She has won countless awards in tennis and is known for her gender equality role by rejecting unequal pay and helping establish women’s professional tennis. Eventually, King’s persistence on equality led to all four major tennis tournaments to pay men and women the same amount. As an older adult, she has helped Michelle Obama with her “Let’s Move” campaign and is a member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition, encouraging Americans to live a healthy lifestyle.
