Lucifer stars Kevin Alejandro and Lesley-Ann Brandt win comedy gongs after raunchy new project (Metro UK)

Lucifer stars Kevin Alejandro and Lesley-Ann Brandt have walked away with three comedy awards after teaming up for a raunchy new project together.

The pair – who play Detective Dan Espinoza and Mazikeen on the fantasy series – reunited for a new short film called Adult Night, playing a couple whose attempt at spicing up their marriage goes awry.

At Puerto Rico’s Rincon Film Festival, the team took home three awards for their efforts, best actress in a comedy, best actor in a comedy, and best comedy.

Not too shabby for the pair! Especially as they produced and starred in it together.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk about the creation of the short film, Kevin explained: ‘It was a story written by a close friend, and Lesley-Ann and I just have really crazy chemistry when it comes to working together and we love working with each other.

‘We just feel really safe in that world together, and it was just an opportunity for us to just join in a different playground and try something.

‘A lot of people, particularly our new Lucifer fans, really only know us through those characters.

‘So it was an opportunity for us to jump out of what they know us as, still get to work together but sort of testing elements of our skills that isn’t normally tested.’

Kevin directed the film alongside his wife, Leslie Alejandro, and he described it perfectly as a ‘Judd Apatow-ish, heightened circumstantial comedy’.

It’s also pretty raunchy – which while Lucifer himself would approve, is definitely not as family friendly as the Netflix show.  After carving an acting career in shows including True Blood, Arrow and Southland, Kevin has found himself gravitating more behind the camera, and thanks the Lucifer team for pushing him in that direction.

‘I never really put a lot of thought behind [being a director]. I’ve always been just the actor and that’s always been my first love and always will be my first true love,’ he told us. ‘

I never thought that I would love anything as much until I discovered directing.

‘I’ve been really fortunate to have people champion me on that you know people on our show. For lack of a better pun, I got my wings on Lucifer!

‘They’ve really supported that, you know, you got to see the midseason finale which I got to direct for season five, and I just got approved to direct the season premiere of season six, so we’ll start off on that soon.

‘I’ve got some real people championing me and wanting me to do well and I’m very grateful for that.’

The midseason finale of Lucifer threw some major spanners in the works of the gang, with the arrival of God himself.

After coronavirus halted production, the team are now back in business to finish season five and make a start on season six.

Season six will be the show’s final season, and came as a surprise to everyone including the cast, with Kevin previously revealing things were shaken up in order to incorporate the additional episodes.

Lucifer is available now on Netflix.
