Actor Kevin Alejandro reveals all the details of the last season of Lucifer
The Texan actor, the protagonist of Lucifer, works on the last season of the series and, in addition, independent projects to consolidate himself as a director.
Kevin Alejandro is 43 years old and his career on American television is strong as an oak. He belongs to that group of actors that you constantly see on the small screen, participating in renowned titles, although, curiously, after a more than respectable career collaborating on series such as True Blood and Arrow , his most stable, popular and constant project was released ago just five years: Lucifer .
This series that navigates between drama, comedy, horror and the supernatural, represents for the actor not only his first leading role in a serial of such magnitude, but also the confirmation of embarking on a new stage in his work: to stand behind the camera, as a director, something that I had been experiencing for a long time. But show business is cruel. Last year, after three seasons, while Kevin was taking a break from Detective Dan Espinoza - his character - he and the rest of the crew found out that it was all over . Lucifer was canceled; It’s nearly five million viewers weren't enough to survive in an industry where the most-watched shows averaged over 21 million.
The numbers while acceptable, are ruthless. But Kevin and the rest of Lucifer's production live in special times in which the online broadcast looks for projects that, while not viable for a television network, are for its platform. In less than a month, Netflix announced the addition of the series to its platform for two more seasons.
Our conversation with Kevin is framed by the closing of production of the third chapter of the fifth season, which will be the last. We take a little step back in time, just upon learning of the cancellation and almost immediately of its alliance with the streaming titan: “When we finished the third season, nobody suspected that it would be canceled. We retired thinking that we would see each other soon and, out of nowhere, it was as if the land on which we were standing was moved. We were no longer meeting, we would no longer work together. It was weird, like we weren't ready for that. Shortly after, with Netflix, the exact opposite happened. Without further ado, we find ourselves together again, we would tell our story again, and streaming is incredible because it gives you more freedom (in history, in times). Now, we are narrating Lucifer just as we want and it will end just as we have planned. That is more liberating than people imagine possible,” he says.
In 2018, Kevin had the opportunity to direct the final chapter of the third season, "Once Upon of Time." A short time before, he signed up for the Warner Brothers directors program, which focuses on teaching the filmmakers how to carry out the episode of a television series, that if there is something demanding it is the times and you must respect them. “Through that program, I received the offer to direct the Lucifer chapter. That opened many doors for me and the desire to continue doing it grew, not only as an actor; now as director. It has been a wonderful process,” he confesses; **“I was also fortunate to build trust with the people involved in the show, such as Jerry Bruckheimer and other directors, who allowed me to observe and learn from the processes that they follow to take charge of a television series. And through that, my yearning to be behind the camera grew and progressed to a wish that I really want to fulfill. " **
That thorn to direct was nailed to him long before his experience in the aforementioned series, which, without a doubt, is his biggest project at that level. However, Kevin already felt an impulse to create very independent things and something that materialized, in 2016, was his YouTube channel Alejandro Films , where he has written, directed and acted projects of a personal nature.
It is a platform on which you experiment as a filmmaker, whose goal is to learn about all levels, from writing and directing, to editing and even music. And he does it from a space where, curiously, anyone has an opinion about his laboratory: “The feedback has been wonderful,” highlights Kevin. “I left the channel open to receive criticism, advice and for people to speak freely. If you visit it, you notice my evolution. I started with a little camera and I did everything. But now with my latest short film (Bedtime Story) you see what I learned, the quality of the material and the people involved. I think that, in part, I owe it to the people on the channel giving me constructive criticism with the intention that I would become a better filmmaker.”
Bedtime Story is an independent production that left him well off; a story about success and the ideas people have about this word. The various ways in which it can be materialized. It's about a writer (Patrick Fischler), who experiences the honeys of triumph after a 25-year career, but in an unexpected and perhaps disappointing way. Alejandro won the award for best director at the Hollywood Short Film Festival: ** “I love being an independent filmmaker. It fascinates me to show that if you have a story and also the right people around you, you don't need a million dollars ”. **
This year, as an actor, he is concentrating all his energy on the final season of Lucifer. There is nothing to distract him from that project, and personally, with Alejandro Films, he is ready to take the next step, take advantage of the fact that today he is recognized as a talent to follow behind the camera, so there is a natural rise that his YouTube channel is currently having:“With the help of my sister, my wife and her sister, also my partners, we decided that we really want to move the mix and turn it into a real production company. We believe that we are surrounded by beautiful people on this planet and they have stories to tell; our goal is to bring some of them to life. We are not looking for a specific genre or a particular point of view; We are only committed to collaborating with people who want to elevate the conversation, ” says Kevin, with the firmness of betting everything at the right time and on the right product.
Alejandro Films is currently developing two documentaries, two series and a couple of feature films, however, the internal philosophy remains intact. Independent projects will continue to be a fundamental part of his offer, such as the short film Adult Night , directed and starring himself: “I love it because it is a process of solutions; if something comes up, you should solve it in the best possible way without the use of money. That's a big challenge, it's honest and raw. But I'm really ready to do more productions like this. "
